To provide some additional context: most of the files in our repository that have a proprietary format (most notably the MS Office formats) are supplemental files to scientific papers. We simply store those supplementals in whatever format they’re delivered to us. The main files (the actual paper) are mostly in PDF format. But if we want to guarantee access to those old Office files, some action will probably be needed at some point (e.g. providing an option to view them with an old version of MS Office running on a VM).

Do you have any strategy of conversion to open standard formats or virtual machine access?
